Cayuga Museum to host Ukrainian embroidery workshops

Ukrainian embroidery.

The Cayuga Museum of History & Art in Auburn will welcome back a local Ukrainian embroidery artist for two workshops this fall.

Nataliia Shynkarenko, of Auburn, will lead "Lyshtva & Shtapivka Embroidery Design" on Sunday, Nov. 17, followed by a "Ukrainian Chain Stitch Embroidery Tote Bag" on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Both workshops take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the main galleries of the museum, 203 Genesee St., Auburn.

In the Nov. 17 workshop, participants will explore traditional Ukrainian embroidery. They will learn the basics of diagonal lyshtva and shtapivka embroidery, including stiches, tips and techniques, while working on a red and black star design. The project will be framed in a wooden hoop for display as decor, and all materials will be provided.

In the Dec. 1 workshop, participants will learn the basics of Ukrainian chain stitch embroidery while working on a red and black flower design on a canvas tote bag. All materials will be provided.

Registration for the first workshop is $35 for the public and $30 for museum members; registration for the second is $45 for the public and $40 for museum members.

A native of Ukraine, Shynkarenko now lives in Auburn and has been fascinated with her home country's embroidery since 2017. She obtained qualifications from Prekrasa Studio, a folk art school there.
