If you’re worried about your luggage zipper breaking while you’re traveling, consider buying a luggage strap — they cinch down your luggage, help make your luggage stand out at baggage claim and add another layer of security in case you have a zipper fiasco. These are just a few of their many benefits, though.

You can also use luggage straps to attach pieces of luggage together, which makes them easier to roll around and frees up your hands for additional carry-on items. Made from durable polypropylene, the strap fits bags up to 72 inches, and has a strong buckle that stands up against baggage claim and plane cargo holds. It has crescent moon shapes across the strap for an added design element, which can also help you find your bag quicker at the baggage carousel. We love that it's easy to adjust the length of the strap to fit your suitcase, and it comes at a great price point, too.

Samsonite’s luggage strap with a combination lock fastens with a buckle and has a triple-dial locking design that sets and resets with hundreds of possible combinations. It fits bags up to 72 inches around, and bright orange, purple, and blue colors make it easy to spot at baggage claim. It also comes in black in case you want a sleeker look.

Before buying luggage straps, measure your luggage and make sure that the straps you’re buying will fit your luggage. Most luggage straps are adjustable, so you should be fine, but you’ll want to do a quick measure just to make sure. If you have multiple pieces of luggage, consider a strap with a wide measurement range to fit all of your bags.

Don’t go with basic black straps. Most luggage straps now come in a wide range of bright colors and patterns, making it easier for you to identify your bag in a flash — and hopefully keeping anyone else from accidentally grabbing your bag. Consider a unique color or print that will help you find your bag fast.

Some suitcases already have a built-in, TSA-approved lock, but if yours doesn’t, a locking luggage strap could be a worthwhile layer of added security. It’s not going to prevent theft, as someone could just slide your luggage strap off, but it could deter a thief looking to quickly grab a bag.

Luggage straps are made to keep your suitcase closed in case the zipper breaks. Secure it tight enough so that if the zipper breaks, your suitcase will remain closed. They also function as a means for identifying your luggage in baggage claim and personalizing your luggage so someone else doesn’t accidentally grab it.

They aren’t necessary, but they can add an extra layer of security and keep your bags closed in case the zipper breaks. They’re also great for identifying your bag at baggage claim, and latching together multiple bags for easier transportation.

Yes, luggage straps are TSA-approved, but that doesn’t mean that TSA might not remove your luggage straps to inspect your bag. A locking luggage strap will have a TSA-approved lock that can be unlocked by TSA.
